You might not care about Lisp but this is an excellent example of literate programming. For about a day it was selling better than Harry Potter. What features from R5RS would have to be removed if one wanted a referentially transparent scheme? As discussed in extraordinary detail in Lisp in Small Pieces, but I don't recall whether the latter (or anything else) examines the connection. Amazon.ca was having an unexpected sale on Lisp in Small Pieces, one of the best books on implementing lisp. I have developed what I call the “Hawaii” test for a good literate program. The book is no longer listed with a price, nor is it listed as available, except from other sellers. Queinnec's “Lisp in Small Pieces” covers the implementation implications of the choice between Lisp-1 and Lisp-2. In other words, it is not really about truly building models. In Lisp In Small Pieces, Christian states that assignment, side-effects, and continuations break referential transparency. Currently Lisp in Small Pieces is number 3. Lisp in Small Pieces is like that; it's more about a cute way to teach things that bends the mind than having fun in exploring design trade-offs. For awhile last week the book Lisp in Small Pieces was the best selling book on the Canada Amazon.com website, out selling Harry Potter. It looks like the Lisp In Small Pieces for $3.95 craze has met its end. It seems to me that there is a clear connection with reflective towers, e.g. I refer you to the excellent book "Lisp in Small Pieces".
